5A Team of the Week: Seguin Matadors
Seguin looked dead in the water, trailing 6A Brazoswood 30-7 at halftime this past Friday. However, the Matadors quickly proved the game was far from over in the second half. Ian Moreno rushed for three touchdowns after halftime and quarterback Corey Dailey threw for two more as they stormed back to secure an improbable 41-37 victory over the Buccaneers.
Moreno had a monster night on the ground. He carried the ball 42 times for 296 yards, and it was his 15-yard touchdown with under two minutes to go that ended up being the game winner.
The craziest part? On Twitter after the game, Moreno said it was his first ever game at running back.
The passing attack also played a big role in the comeback. Dailey completed 21 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Ayden Avila led the way in the receiving corps with 68 receiving yards and a touchdown. Aidan Flores and Moreno also each had touchdown receptions.
Brazoswood had problems with the Seguin defense too. The Matadors recovered two fumbles in the fourth quarter and forced four turnovers in all. Avila had an interception and Jared Rogers, Ezekiel Gutierrez, and Kaiden de la Garza all recovered fumbles.
After a win like that, Seguin will have plenty of momentum heading into district play this week. The Matadors will welcome in Victoria East to begin District 13-5A Division I play this Friday at 7:00.
