5A Team of the Week: Juarez-Lincoln Huskies

Last Friday, for the first time since October 18, 2019, Juarez-Lincoln was able to celebrate a victory. The Huskies knocked off Donna North 28-21 to snap their 34-game losing streak.

The win was also the first for Juarez-Lincoln head coach Daniel Cortez. He was promoted from offensive coordinator over the offseason.

The Huskies had a big night on the ground. Ramiro Olivarez led the way with 105 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. Quarterback John Menchaca finished with 88 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Victor Aleman added 54 yards and a score of his own.

Menchaca didn’t throw the ball much, but he took care of business when he did, completing five of six passes for 49 yards and a touchdown. That touchdown was a 13-yard completion to Sebastian Lopez, his lone catch of the night.

Defensively, the Huskies came out hunting. They picked off Donna North four times. Ernesto Rodriguez had two interceptions, while Lopez and Alexis Contreras had one apiece.

After a strong night on both sides of the ball, the Huskies will hope this isn’t just a one-off performance. They’ll look to build on this breakthrough victory this upcoming Friday when they travel to Edinburg to face 6A Economedes.
