If there is a short list of games of the year in Texas High School football, the clash between the Willis Wildkats (3-0, 1-0) and The Woodlands Highlanders (3-0, 1-0) definitely belongs. This rivalry matchup in District 13-6A could have determined the district champion on Thursday night.

Game Recap

Willis received the opening kick and quickly scored through an 18-yard touchdown pass from Jack Emerson to Romel Stevens. The Woodlands responded swiftly as Jack Daulton connected with Tulsa commit Shane Walker for a 47-yard touchdown. Following an interception by The Woodlands’ James Cantelupe, Jackson Bolender’s 85-yard touchdown run put the Highlanders ahead 14-7.

Two costly turnovers by The Woodlands allowed Willis to take the lead. The Wildkats converted a Bolender fumble into a 12-play drive, capped by Daylion Robinson’s three-yard touchdown run. A fumbled exchange led to another drive, ending with Emerson’s 43-yard touchdown pass to Jermaine Bishop Jr, giving Willis a 21-14 lead.

The Woodlands tied it with a 28-yard pass from Daulton to Eli Lancaster, but Willis answered quickly. Emerson’s 53-yard pass to Terri Lawrence III set up Robinson’s second touchdown, putting Willis up 28-21 at halftime.

The Woodlands tied the game again after halftime with a 36-yard touchdown pass from Daulton to Kimo Kouletsis. Willis’ punt gave way to a one-yard touchdown run by Cody Jordan, giving The Woodlands a 35-28 lead. Jermaine Bishop Jr’s 57-yard touchdown reception from Emerson tied it again. An interception by Jacorion Hatchett led to another touchdown pass from Emerson to Bishop, giving Willis a 42-35 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Woodlands tied it again with a 32-yard touchdown by Jason Haskins. Tied at 42 with 4:49 remaining, Willis methodically moved downfield, setting up Justin Willis for a 28-yard game-winning field goal as time expired, securing a 45-42 win.
