On Friday night, the Monterey Plainsmen looked to bounce back from last week’s 40-23 loss to Choctaw as they traveled to Abilene to take on Wylie in hopes of securing their first win. Wylie was also looking to secure their first win after a canceled game against Brownwood last week.
First Half
Both teams came out strong, with Wylie striking first. However, Monterey quickly evened the score 14-14 heading into the second quarter. In the second quarter, Wylie dominated, marching down the field twice to take a 20-14 lead into halftime.
Second Half
Wylie continued their momentum, scoring immediately to extend their lead to 26-14. However, Monterey responded on the next drive, narrowing the lead to 26-21 by the fourth quarter. Dezmond Williams had a standout performance with 20 carries for 144 yards, scoring a touchdown. Kyree Baxter also contributed 117 rushing yards on 11 touches, scoring once.
In the final minutes, Luke Arrington connected with a receiver to give Monterey the lead, but Wylie wasn’t finished. The Bulldogs marched down the field and secured the game-winning field goal, sealing a 29-28 victory.
Next week, Monterey will take on the Franklin Cougars, who are 1-1 after a 24-14 loss to Del Valle. Wylie will continue their season against the Coronado Mustangs, also 1-1, coming off a 45-17 loss to Lubbock Cooper.
