On a chilly November evening, the Wylie Bulldogs closed out their regular season with a 28-17 victory over Plainview, securing the District 2-5A Division II title outright. Wylie’s offense struck early, as senior wide receiver Hunter Hood scored on a wildcat rushing touchdown late in the first quarter, giving his team a 7-0 lead. Moments later, Jaegan Smith extended the lead to 14-0 with a 50-yard slip screen touchdown.
Plainview fought back before halftime, with junior Zachary Soliz forcing and recovering a fumble to set up quarterback Seth Mayberry’s touchdown pass to Maddox Ellis, cutting the deficit to 14-7. However, Wylie executed a textbook two-minute drill, with Hood adding his second touchdown to extend the lead to 21-7 at the break.
The game tightened in the third quarter when a botched Wylie snap gave Plainview prime field position at the 17-yard line. Although Plainview settled for a field goal to make it 21-10, Wylie responded with another red-zone rushing touchdown to widen the lead to 28-10. Mayberry’s rushing touchdown brought the score to 28-17 in the fourth, but a late interception sealed the game for Wylie.
Despite the loss, Plainview celebrated individual achievements, including Ellis setting a school record for most receiving yards in a single season. Plainview finishes 3-7 overall, while Wylie enters the playoffs as the district’s top seed, riding a six-game win streak.
