It’s been a wild ride for Yoakum in 2016. At one point, the Bulldogs were 2-4 and it just didn’t look like it would be their year. But nine wins later, they’re in the 3A Division I title game where the winner will take home their first state title in school history.

To get to this point, the Bulldogs have been able to come up with the big plays needed to win close games. In fact, they’ve won their last three games by a combined 10 points, including an upset win over previously unbeaten Malakoff. The Bulldogs like to pound the rock and have a variety of runners that they can rely on. Henry Enoch and Ethan Owens are two bruising runners out of the backfield for the Bulldogs, but there is another pair of athletes that have made big plays all year.

Those athletes would be the Moore twins, Josh and Jordan. Not only are they big play threats on offense, they’re stars on defense and special teams. In last week’s win, Jordan caught a touchdown and the game-sealing interception. His brother was inserted in as the quarterback late as well and ended up throwing the game winning touchdown pass to Owens. Offensively, the brothers have combined for more than 2,000 all-purpose yards and every team that plays them has to account for where #1 and #2 are on the field at all times.

The Bulldogs are red-hot right now and this run is a testament to the high levels of resiliency and toughness to make it this far. They face a Mineola team that counters with a strong running game and a tremendous amount of speed. Also, some of the Yellowjackets have been on this stage when they made the title game in 2014. Yoakum hasn’t been this far since 1952. That experience could be a factor, but the Bulldogs aren’t worried about that. They’re asking: Why not us?
