The Slaton Tigers are heading into the 2025 season with momentum, confidence, and a culture that’s fully taken root under head coach Clint Conkin. Assistant coach Zachary Nava, a former Slaton athlete himself, has seen the program from both the highs and lows — and believes this year’s team is ready to take the next step.
“This has been one of the best offseasons I’ve been a part of here,” Nava said. “Going into year three with Coach Conkin, the kids have completely bought into his culture. That’s been huge for Slaton.”
The results are already showing. After winning just two games combined in the two seasons before Conkin’s arrival, the Tigers went 7-4 last year, earning a spot as bi-district finalists. With 17 starters returning — including standout dual-threat quarterback Jacob Lopez, dynamic receiver Z’qedrian Whaley, and tackling machine Mason Martinez — expectations are higher than ever.
Nava points to speed, physicality, and a multi-sport mentality as key strengths. “Our kids buy into everything — whether it’s track, basketball, baseball — that success carries over,” he said. “The energy’s been incredible.”
While District 2-3A Division II will present its challenges, Nava believes execution and focus will give the Tigers a shot at a district title. “Every game’s tough, but if we do our jobs, we can compete with anyone,” he said.
With buy-in from players, a growing belief in the program, and the leadership to match, Slaton might just be one of the most dangerous teams in West Texas this fall.
