Top 20 Showdown at Desoto
The Desoto Eagles are coming off back to back 9-3 seasons with disappointing area round playoff exits. Few teams were hit with more graduating seniors than the Eagles, but they find themselves back in the top 20 teams in the state with a chance to make a deep playoff run.
Desoto is lead by their Quarterback, Samari Collier. The 6’2” QB is an Illinois commit. He had a great year last year, passing for over 2,500 yards and 32 touchdowns. Desoto should have a strong defense, with multiple players likely to be all-state, such as Byron Murphy, Shemar Turner and Devyn Bobby. If the Eagles can get consistent play out of their talented wide receivers and running backs, and good play from the several underclassmen starters, they could get past the area round in the UIL Playoffs.
Desoto only has six games on their current schedule, three of which are against teams ranked in the top 20 in the state. They kick their season off vs Converse Judson at home this week.
Converse Judson is also playing their first game of the season. The Rockets face a 7 game schedule, starting off with the Eagles and having to play Schertz Cibolo Steele in their second to last game.
The Rockets also lost several graduating players. But, for a team that is 24-3 over their last 2 seasons and has won 6 state titles, they have reloaded as you’d expect. If it was a full season with their typical schedule, we have no doubt they’d be looking at another 10+ win season. They are led by their running back, DeAnthony Lewis. The all-state back ran for over 1,800 yards and 27 touchdowns last year and is one of the best players in Texas. In just a 7 game regular season, we expect he will go over 1,000 yards. The Rockets do have some very productive returning players from last year, like Donnie Moody and Nate Pryor.
We have Desoto ranked a few spots higher than most and we do favor them over Converse Judson. Whoever wins this game will likely be in our top 10 in the state next week.
