The Humble Atascocita Eagles 29 game district win streak looked in jeopardy for a while Friday night as they found themselves down 10 points to the C.E. King Panthers at halftime on the road.
The Eagles jumped on the Panthers early in the first quarter, taking a 14-0 lead behind Tyras Winfield 37 yard touchdown run, and his trick-play halfback pass touchdown to Deion Brown. Up 14-0, the Panthers punted the ball back to the Eagles, but the Eagles fumbled and the Panthers ran it back for a special teams touchdown to cut the lead to 7-14. After a defensive stop, the Panthers running back Jerrell Wimbely took the ball 30 yards for a rushing touchdown to tie the game. After another quick stop, C.E. King quarterback Kameron Kincheon drove the teach down for another touchdown, finding Kameron Scott for a 21-yard touchdown to put them up 21-14 early in the second quarter. Neither team would do much from there, with the only score being a Christopher Bonilla field goal to put C.E. King up 24-14 at halftime.
The Eagles defense that shut down the Panthers from early in the second quarter on continued in the second half. They totally shut down the C.E. King offense that had looked unstoppable for the 8 minute stretch in the first half. Eagles quarterback Gavin Session got their offense moving in the second half. He found Keith Wheeler III for a 30 yard touchdown to cut the lead to 3 points. The two connected again for the go-ahead touchdown, taking a 28-24 lead. That would be enough for the win.
Final Score: Atascocita Eagles 28 / C.E. King Panthers 24
The Eagles improve to 4-0 in district play and 5-1 overall. Their one loss was their first game, dropping their opener to Allen, 27-52. Their next game is against undefeated and the #1 team in the state, North Shore. That game will be for the District 21-6A title. C.E. King is now 5-2 and 2-1 in district play. They face North Shore next week. An upset win would give them an outside chance at winning the district.
