2 Running Backs Go Over 100 Yards as Undefeated Oak Ridge Drops First Game to Montgomery

The Conroe Oak Ridge War Eagles were one of the bigger surprises in 6A this year.  Coming off of a 3-7 season the Eagles found themselves at 3-0.  They started with an 18-7 win over Clear Creek, then a 25-22 win at Houston Stratford, then beating Humble 28-17.  They were rolling and looked like they might be the favorites in their remaining games. But, Montgomery put an end to the 3 game Oak Ridge win streak.

Final Score:  Oak Ridge 13 – Montgomery 38

Oak Ridge was without a few of its stars. Alton McCaskil and Scott Hickey, who have been responsible for a lot of the War Eagles offense this season, were out.  They were also without Landon Lightsey, who had over 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns last week vs Humble was also out briefly in the game battling an injury.  The Montgomery Bears took full advantage.

The Bears were 1-2 coming into the season, with a tough loss last week to Crosby 52-55.  They had an opening loss to New Caney Porter, 21-22 and got a win on the road in their second game, 36-14 against Dayton,  Their total win total last year was two, going 2-8.  They matched that win total with this win.  The War Eagles started the game looking strong, driving right down to the goal line, but then Josiah Gaetani picked off a pass for the Bears and ran it back for a touchdown, and the Bears were off and running and did not look back. Oak Ridge did keep it close early, with Camden Morgan scoring on a 17-yard run to make it 7-6. But on the next drive, Montgomery junior Jalen Washington ran for a 67-yard touchdown and the Bears controlled the rest of the game.  The War Eagles were only able to score again after a fumble recovery in the third quarter that led to Quarterback Steve Smedley hitting Jaquale Harrison for a 15-yard touchdown.

The Bears were without Wide Receiver Tre Harden, who had 380 yards receiving last week, but the offense, after a slow start, kept rolling. They had two running backs go over 100 yards. Adavion Johnson rushed for 111 yards and Jalen Washington for 101 yards. Quarterback Brock Bolfing threw for 179 yards.  But the key to the win was the Bears defense, giving up only 218 yards.

The 2-2 Montgomery Bears next game on their schedule is Fulshear on the 29th, though the schedule may change.  Oak Ridge, now 3-1, will look to bounce back next against Conroe on the 29th (again, unless the schedule changes).  The Conroe Tigers are 3-1 themselves, bouncing back from a 14-24 opening loss to Katy Mayde Creek to beat Humble Kingwood 42-7, Humble Summer Creek 37-21, and Fort Bend Dulles 47-7. The winner of the Conroe vs Oak Ridge game might find themselves moving into our Top 25 rankings.
