The Mason Punchers will be looking to punch their way back into the playoffs and possibly back to Jerry World this season. Coach Kade Burns is entering his 6th season at the helm of his alma mater and he should like his odds this season with the players that are returning. Right out of the gate the Punchers will face the Goldthwaite Eagles, who handed Mason 1 of their only 3 losses last season 20-13.
Players To Watch
The Punchers offense is lead by 2016 district player of the year QB Otto Wofford (1,071 passing, 8 td’s) and district newcomer of the year RB/DB Klay Klaerner (493 rushing, 6 td’s; 111 tackles, 9 sacks). Blocking up front for these guys are OL Xavier Herrera (5’9,200) and Lucas Martin (6’3, 270). The defense will be lead by RB/LB Emanuel Martinez (124 tackles), DB Bode McMillan (5 int’s), DE Sebastian Burke, DL Kason Silerio (5’10, 205), DL Jorge Lopez, and LB Cal Rasch.
Mason has become a power in Class 2A over the past decade, with an overall record of 100-W 17-L with a State Championship in 2011 and State Runner-Up in 2014. Last season the Punchers went 11-3, winning a district championship and making it to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual State Champions Refugio 28-7.
What’s To Come
Mason traveled to Sonora last Friday for a scrimmage with the Broncos. The scrimmage was very defense heavy with neither varsity team coming away with a score. The offense should come alive, but knowing that the defense is stout should be a good indication that the Punchers will make teams work hard to earn their points. The JV Punchers looked good as well, scoring 3 times while holding Sonora scoreless.
Thursday August 24, the Punchers will host Blanco for their final tuneup before the regular season starts. September 1, you could expect to the Puncher Dome packed with loyal fans in Purple and White, as the Punchers look to redeem last season’s opening loss and begin their journey towards AT&T Stadium.
