Gunter Key Players and Storylines
Gunter mowed through its opponents a year ago with an average margin of victory over 48.5 points. With that dominance, the Tigers won back-to-back state championships for the first time ever, knocking off Tidehaven 30-14 in the 3A Division II State Title Game.
Now, they will seek a third-straight state title with seven starters back on each side of the ball.
Last year’s star quarterback Walker Overman graduated, but the offense is still full of weapons. Athletic running back Brock Boddie has “exceptional football IQ” and will bring plenty of speed to the backfield. Tight end Cole Harpole is a “big and physical” and can come down with 50-50 balls.

Colin Peacock is a ballhawk no matter where he lines up. A three-year starter, he’ll play some receiver and also safety, the position which he’s expected to play at the next level.
And while Peacock is holding down the fort on the back end of the defense, defensive ends Major Thornhill and Hayden Farrell will be making opponents’ lives miserable up front. Farrell has earned the nickname “the terminator” and “doesn’t stay blocked” while Thornhill is reliable as a pass rusher or in run defense.
The Tigers also have a weapon on special teams with kicker Preston Tarpley. He’s also likely to play a key role at quarterback after seeing time at the position a year ago.
This Gunter program has been one of the best in Texas across the decade. The current group is bought in and willing to play for each other, a promising sign for Tiger fans and a warning sign to all others.
