The Top 5 Texas High School Football Athletes Currently Competing In College Football
Today marks a mere 100 days until college athletes take the gridiron. In preparation for kickoff, we decided to evaluate those who competed in Texas high school football who will make the biggest impact in 2024.
Shedeur Sanders: Colorado, Trinity Christian, QB
More than likely projected to go first overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, Sanders accounted for almost 300 yards a game and only three interceptions last season. The biggest drawback is the media circus that comes with his father, Deion, coaching. Obviously, “Prime Time” showed some inexperience, as the play-caller showed last year, dropping six consecutive games to end the season.
With Trinity Christian, Sanders played for four years on varsity, recording the 10th-most wins at the prep level. In his high school career, he completed 12,627 yards and 166 touchdowns, including a 2020 TCAL National Championship win.
Jalen Milroe: Alabama, Tompkins, QB
The Crimson Tide looks to continue their championship success, even without coach Nick Saban on the sidelines. Milroe’s first season as a starter saw him amass over 2,700 yards passing and 23 touchdowns, as well as 468 yards rushing and 12 scores on the ground. Despite a poor showing against Texas, Alabama finished with an SEC Championship and a Rose Bowl appearance.
Under coach Todd McVey at Tompkins High School, Milroe claimed a 9-0 record during his senior season, launching 1,136 passing yards and 13 touchdowns.
Ollie Gordon II: Oklahoma State, Trinity, RB
Essentially, Ollie Gordon II carried OSU to a Big 12 Championship Game, averaging 3.8 yards per carry, and leading the nation in rushing yards. Last season, Gordon II received more votes for the Heisman Trophy than any other running back, finishing seventh overall in voting.
Competing for Trinity, Gordon II boasted 257 carries for 2,546 yards at 9.9 yards per carry for 35 touchdowns.
Kelvin Banks Jr.: Texas, Summer Creek, OL
In 14 games last season, Banks only allowed one sack and 14 total pressures. If his performance is anything like last season, he will likely be selected in the first round— a big boost to a Longhorns franchise that hasn’t had an o-lineman drafted that high since 2002.
During his senior season with Summer Creek, Banks Jr. helped anchor an offense that averaged 43.2. total yards (310.6 rushing) and 45.6 points per game.
Quinn Ewers: Texas, Southlake Carroll, QB
With Arch Manning waiting on the bench, Quinn Ewers elevated his performance last year, leading his team to a CFP selection over undefeated Florida State. This year, Texas enters the SEC, which will prove to be a true litmus test of Ewers’s capabilities.
In two seasons as Southlake Carroll’s starter, Ewer passed for 6,445 yards and 73 touchdown passes. After committing to Ohio State and forgoing his senior high school season, Ewers transferred to Texas.
