Longview Defeats Arkansas Powerhouse Bryant 24-21
The Longview Lobos hosted Bryant, Ark., a powerhouse in the state of Arkansas, during their homecoming game Friday night. The Lobos record vs. out-of-state opponents improved to 32-18-1, and they also improved their record vs opponents from the state of Arkansas to 6-0 with a 24-21 win at Lobo Stadium.
Also, the Lobos improved to 18-0 in homecoming games under head football coach John King.
The Bryant Hornets’ 32-game winning streak also came to an end, a streak that began in November of 2018.
1st Half
The teams fought back and forth in the first quarter and didn’t score until a 25-yard field goal from Michael Fields gave Longview the 3-0 lead in the first quarter.
Both teams scored in the second period. Bryant quarterback Carson Burnett hit WR Alex Humphreys for a 43-yard gain, then connected on a 25-yard touchdown pass to WR Mytorian Singleton late in the second quarter.
Longview then answered with a 93-yard scoring drive that resulted in a Joshua Thomas 66-yard touchdown strike to Jalen Hale to make the score 10-7 going into halftime.
2nd Half
The Lobos had a troublesome start to the third quarter and committed turnovers, Throwing an interception and later fumbling the ball at the Longview six-yard line.
Bryant took advantage and quickly went to work. Burnett gained yardage on short runs, gaining one and five yards as the Hornets took back the lead at 14-10 late in the third quarter.
The Lobos regained their composure and the lead with a Jordan Allen five-yard touchdown run to make the score 17-14 in favor of Longview.
At the start of the 4th quarter, Willie Nelson stepped in front of a Burnett pass and made the interception to give possession back to Longview. The Lobos later took its largest lead of the game on a 20-yard fourth-and-three pass from Allen to Hale for a touchdown.
Bryant kept fighting right up until the end. Burnett connected with Jordan Knox for a 24-yard gain and then threw to Robert Hendrix in the end zone as time expired.
Final Score: Longview 24-Bryant (Ark.) 21.
For Longview, Allen finished the game 3-4 passing, 39 yards, and one touchdown. Thomas was 4-for-13 passing for 99 yards with a touchdown and an interception.
Longview prepares for its first district 7-5A game as they travel to play West Mesquite at 7 p.m. on Thursday night.
