Duncanville is one cleat stepping forward from reaching the finals for the third straight year.
A day after being named the Gatorade Texas Player of the Year, Keelon Russell continued his impressive year, leading his team for 237 yards and one touchdown in a 18-point victory, 31-13, over Cypress Bridgeland in the Class 6A Division I regional final.
So far, the Panthers are averaging 319 yards per game passing behind the arm of Alabama signee Keelon Russell; he now boasts a 42-1 career record.
There was some cause for concern at the start, when the Panthers put only seven points on the board in the first quarter—their lowest opening total since their 42-20 regular-season victory over DeSoto.
With Russell struggling in the rain, running back JaQualon Armstrong helped his squad on the ground, rushing for 71 yards on 12 carries and finding the end zone twice.
The Panthers defense allowed their first 250-yard rush effort by running back Kash Schwab, but balanced it out with two interceptions, including a linebacker Jaylyn Manning grab with 7:46 left that set up a 2-yard scramble by wide receiver Ayson Theus that put the game out of reach.
For the seventh straight season, the Panthers will compete in the state semifinal game. Dating back to last season, Duncanville has now won 20 straight games.
Next up, the Panthers will play against North Crowley; the game is a rematch of last year’s contest, where Duncanville came out on top 52-10.
