Texas is sending another quarterback into the SEC pipeline.

Four-star quarterback Colton Nussmeier has committed to Georgia for the 2027 recruiting class, choosing the Bulldogs over finalists Arkansas and UCLA. Nussmeier is listed by 247Sports as the No. 10 quarterback and No. 142 overall prospect in the 2027 class. He is also now marked as a Georgia commit.

For Texas high school football fans, the name should already sound familiar.

Nussmeier is the son of New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and the younger brother of former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier. So yes, this is one of those football families where Thanksgiving probably includes blitz pickup talk between bites of mashed potatoes.

But Colton has built his own name too.

The left-handed quarterback spent the early part of his high school career at Flower Mound Marcus, the same program where Garrett became one of the most productive passers in Texas high school football. Colton has since transferred to Denton Ryan, giving one of North Texas’ top programs another major piece heading into his senior season.

His junior year was interrupted by a knee injury, but the production was still strong. Nussmeier threw for 1,390 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just one interception in eight games. He also added 278 rushing yards and three touchdowns, showing he is not just a clean-pocket passer.

That matters because the scouting profile on Nussmeier is not built only on the last name.

He has good size at around 6-foot-3.5 and roughly 195 to 200 pounds, depending on the recruiting service. He is known for polished mechanics, pocket poise, and accuracy in the short-to-intermediate passing game. On3 lists him as a Georgia commitment and notes his family connection to Garrett and Doug Nussmeier.

The Georgia connection runs deeper than recruiting graphics and SEC logos.

Doug Nussmeier previously coached with Kirby Smart under Nick Saban at Alabama. That gave Georgia an existing relationship with the family before Colton’s recruitment ever became a national storyline. In modern recruiting, familiarity does not win every battle, but it sure does not hurt.

For Georgia, this gives the Bulldogs a quarterback centerpiece in the 2027 class. Programs like Georgia do not just recruit quarterbacks. They recruit players who can help recruit other players. Landing a Texas four-star quarterback with a national profile gives the Bulldogs a key offensive name to build around.

For Denton Ryan, it adds even more attention to a program already used to the spotlight. The Raiders have long been one of the most respected brands in Texas high school football. Adding a quarterback with Nussmeier’s profile only raises the volume.

Now comes the fun part.

Nussmeier’s commitment is locked in, but his final Texas high school season is still ahead. He will get a chance to lead Denton Ryan, continue his recovery arc, and show why Georgia made him its quarterback choice for the 2027 cycle.

The last name will always get attention.

The next season gives Colton Nussmeier a chance to make sure the evaluation is about much more than that.
