Churchill Key Players and Storylines
After back-to-back six win seasons, Churchill stumbled to a 2-8 finish in 2025. With ten returning starters, the Chargers are determined to take a step forward this year and “leave Churchill better than they found it.”
Offensively, Churchill will ride the ground game this season. Running back Kalobe Rond (818 rushing yards and nine touchdowns) is the “most explosive player in the district” in the eyes of head coach Nate Shaw. 6’6”, 250-pound offensive lineman Zach Lindsey can “dominate up front,” while quarterback Jayden Garcia (1,158 passing yards and 12 touchdowns) is a “great game manager.” He threw just two interceptions on 173 attempts in 2025.

While the offense relies on its rushing attack, Shaw said the defense needs to take a step forward against the run. Linebackers Justin Mason and Ethan Byrd will take charge of that effort. Both were all-district honorable mentions last season. Behind them, defensive back Mason Cortez will lead the secondary with his football IQ.
Shaw believes this year’s group has taken a step in the right direction. After five of their six district losses came by 14 points or less, a turnaround in 2026 is certainly not out of the question for the Chargers.
