No one gave Magnolia West much of a chance heading into its district game against Klein Collins this past Friday. The Mustangs were 0-4 in district play and were 32-point underdogs, according to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.
But there’s a reason games aren’t played on paper.
Magnolia West running back Gage Jordan ripped off a 99-yard run to put the Mustangs up 18-8 in the fourth quarter and the defense did enough from there to seal the 18-15 victory.
“What impressed me the most this last week was our kids’ mentality to continue to work hard and improve on the little things after a rough couple weeks,” Magnolia West head coach Ben McGehee said. “They just continue to fight for each other and have shown a lot of grit. It was a big win for our kids to prove to themselves that they can play with anyone. Our district is tough week in and week out and you have to bring it every week.”
The Mustang defense played a big role in the victory. Linebacker Peyton Bjorgaard and defensive backs Dawson Campbell and Thomas Hoffart all had fumble recoveries. Campbell led the defense with 12 total tackles, while Bjorgaard had 10.
Offensively, Jordan had 23 carries for 154 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Collin May threw for 106 yards and also had 30 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
The Mustangs are now 3-4 on the season. They’ll look to build off the upset this Thursday when they travel to face Klein.
