Edinburg Economedes Jaguars

Last Season: 9-2; 4-1 in district (Lost to Los Fresnos in bi-district)

Economedes Key Players and Storylines

The tide is turning at Economedes. The Jaguars are fresh off their winningest season in their 26-year program history. Their second place district finish was their best since they shared a district title back in 2003.

Head coach Raul Salas has said the culture has changed and the community is buying in to the program.

Now, the trick is building off of that success with 12 returning starters. Offensively, the Jaguars are in great shape with returning first team all-district quarterback Juan Carreon (672 passing yards, 910 rushing yards, 20 total TDs), who is a four-year letterman. He’ll keep Economedes’ option-based offense moving alongside running back Reyes Luna (633 rushing yards and nine touchdowns). Three-year letterman center Landin Cantu will lead the trenches with his knowledge of the offensive system.

Defensively, the Jaguars will turn to another four-year letterman in tackling machine linebacker Jaime Eugia (108 tackles, eight TFLs). Sophomore cornerback Mark Chavira (64 tackles) is a rising star in the secondary after bursting onto the scene with four interceptions a year ago as is junior safety Angel Martinez (51 tackles), a returning second team all-district player. Up front, defensive end David Aguilar is poised for a big senior year with his speed off the edge.

Salas believes this team has just as much talent as last year’s squad. He feels confident that any gaps can be filled by players coming up from subvarsity squads that “represented Economedes well.” Now, the Jaguars will turn their attention to going one spot better this year as they look to bring home the first outright district title in school history.
