Veterans Memorial Key Players and Storylines

Veterans Memorial’s 1-3 district record from 2025 doesn’t look great on paper, but it should be noted two of those three losses came by five combined points. With the culture Jose Ramirez has developed in his three successful seasons in charge, the Chargers will be determined to have more success in the games that matter this year.

Offensively, the Chargers need to find some new ball-carriers after graduating two 1,000-yard rushers from their triple option offense. They do have chief decision maker quarterback Jake Saenz (668 rushing yards and nine touchdowns; 227 passing yards) back. He’ll keep the offense playing fast and confident along with players like slot Maddox Bond (343 rushing yards and two touchdowns), who is a threat every time he gets the ball in space. 

In the trenches, Veterans Memorial graduated three all-district linemen, so the consistency of senior guard Edward Lerma will be key. He’ll be expected to set the tone up front for the Chargers.

Defensively, the Chargers have a great one-two punch on the back end with returning first team all-district safety Diego Benavidez (34 tackles) and Erick Gallegos (51 tackles), who shifts from cornerback to safety after impressing both in coverage and in his physical run defense. Cornerback Victor Olvera (37 tackles and one INT) will step up in his place, going against some of the district’s top receivers on the outside week in and week out. Defensive tackle Angel Garcia (62 tackles) will be the defense’s anchor up front as the team’s leading returning tackler.

The Chargers certainly lost some talent from the Class of 2026, but their coaching staff said they still have strong leaders returning this fall. With the physicality they are ready to establish both in their rushing attack and on defense, a sixth-straight playoff berth will be the bare minimum expectation in Brownsville this fall.
