Hamilton Key Players and Storylines
Hamilton has done nothing but make history under head coach Ryan Marwitz. In 2024, the Bulldogs reached their first-ever state semifinal. Then last year, they broke through with their first-ever state title in a 21-7 victory over Joaquin in the 2A Division I State Title Game.
This year, a new challenge awaits as the Bulldogs move up to 3A Division II for the first time since 2019. They also have to replace a loaded senior class.
The Bulldogs graduated their starting quarterback, starting running back, top two receivers, and three all-district offensive linemen. That means the duo of Zeb Murphree, a returning District Newcomer of the Year, and Vanden Phillips, a 2025 second team all-district selection, will have to take on a lead role on the offensive line. Expect senior running back Corey Turner (271 rushing yards and six touchdowns) to see his role in the backfield expand this fall after serving as second fiddle a year ago.
The Bulldog defense has more pieces back with leaders at all three levels. Linebacker Easton Marwitz had a remarkable debut season as a freshman last year, leading the Bulldogs with 163 tackles, while defensive end Kennon Lee (88 tackles, 23 TFLs) brings a high motor coming off the edge. On the back end, safety CJ De La Garza (137 tackles, six INTs) can do it all as a ball hawk who is also a reliable tackler.
A year ago, the Bulldogs gave up just 10.8 points per game. They’ll need that defense to be stingy again this year as they look to compete right away at the 3A Division II level.
