Down scores with a minute to go? Normally, game over.
Except, not in Canadian this past Friday.
Canadian led Shallowater 28-16 when Shallowater quarterback Logan Winn found Mikah Blackshear for an 18-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 28-23 with 56 seconds left.
The dominoes kept falling. The Mustangs then recovered an onside kick to give their offense one last chance. Winn took it, finding Blackshear for a seven-yard touchdown with 33 seconds left to seal an unbelievable 31-28 victory following a successful two-point conversion.
“Canadian has a great team and great tradition. It is an extremely tough place to play and win,” Shallowater head coach Rodney Vincent said. “I encouraged them not to look at the scoreboard and to just win each play and assignment. I am so proud of the way our players did not panic and stuck together through the comeback. “

Winn finished with 289 passing yards and four touchdowns, while also leading the Mustangs with 52 rushing yards. Unsurprisingly, Blackshear was his favorite target with eight catches for 98 yards and those two scores. Gavin Guajardo and Easton Foster each had touchdown catches for the Mustangs.
With the win, Shallowater improves to 3-0 on the season. Next up, the Mustangs will return home for a showdown with Monahans this Friday.
