Wall Key Players and Storylines

Wall knew it had a special group last year, and the Hawks’ magic never ran out. They finished a perfect 16-0 and brought home their first-ever state title in a nail-biting 25-24 win over Newton in the 3A Division II State Title Game.

This year, a lot is different. Not only do the Hawks have to replace 16 of their 22 starters, but they also are moving up to 3A Division I.

Slaughter said this year’s group still has talent, but they are relatively inexperienced heading into the fall. Senior quarterback Gunner King (291 passing yards) has been waiting his turn and is ready to lead the Hawks this fall. The presence of standout receivers Evan Boehle (535 receiving yards and six touchdowns) and Jager Thompson (559 receiving yards and eight touchdowns) should help ease his transition. Slaughter also believes junior running back Gunner Garza (297 rushing yards and three touchdowns) could be poised to break out this season.

Defensively, Wall graduated its top two tacklers, but athletic linebacker Slayton Hallmark (96 tackles, 11 TFLs) is more than ready to be the face of the unit. Up front, defensive tackle Mason Steen (68 tackles, five TFLs) is a force in the interior while defensive end Kaden McFarden (81 tackles, 11 TFLs) can be a “game wrecker” off the edge. In the secondary, 6’0″ junior cornerback Christian Camp will get his shot at locking down the best receiver on opposing teams.

Nothing will come easy for the Hawks this year in district play. Out of the five teams in District 3-3A Division I, Wall, Llano and Early all won their districts last year. A tough non-district schedule will help as the Hawks look to gain the experience needed to remain highly competitive as they make a jump up in divisions.
