1A Team of the Week: Borden County Coyotes
It’s pretty rare to get a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the regular season. But, according to SixManFootball.com’s rankings, that was the case this past weekend as top-ranked Borden County hosted second-ranked Whiteface.
The game lived up to the billing and then some.
With just seven seconds left and the game tied at 69, Tye Stipe weaved his way into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown as time expired. It was the exclamation mark on a huge night for Stipe, who carried the ball 33 times for 374 yards and seven touchdowns.
For Borden County, the 75-69 victory cements their top spot in 1A Division I.
“It was very exciting. You don’t see many of those games in the non-district schedule. Definitely a playoff atmosphere,” Borden County head coach Craig Steele said. “Our kids are resilient. I was proud of how hard they fought.”
Issac Martinez also pitched in offensively with 20 rushing yards and a touchdown as well as a 19-yard touchdown reception. Defensively, Luke Stansell had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery, Johnny Martinez had 11 tackles, and Cale Beaver finished with 10 tackles.
With the win, Borden County is now 5-0 on the season. The Coyotes will now have a bye week before opening district play on Oct. 9 at home against O’Donnell.
