1A Team of the Week: Hermleigh Cardinals

Hermleigh’s week four matchup on the road at Nazareth was supposed to be a toss-up.

SixManFootball.com had Nazareth as the No. 14 team in 1A Division I with Hermleigh coming in right behind them at No. 19.

The Cardinals had other ideas. Their defense forced five turnovers, the offense took advantage, and the Cardinals soared to a statement 50-0 victory.

“We have a team of veterans whose main focus is winning and don’t care how we do it,” Hermleigh head coach Sammy Winters said. “We played a very well-rounded game on Friday. Our offense was efficient but didn’t have to do much work because of how well our defense played.”

Hayden Simpson had two interceptions, Zaylan Delce had an interception and a forced fumble, and Aaron Olvera had Hermleigh’s other forced fumble.

Offensively, Simpson ran for 96 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for 155 yards and two scores. Max Mendoza had both touchdown catches.

“I have been so impressed by this group’s mentality when we go out to play games,” Winters said. “Having a senior heavy group is a huge benefit for us. They are leading us extremely well, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

The Cardinals are now a perfect 4-0 on the season. They will now close out non-district play against the West Texas Tornadoes this week before they open district play at Rotan on Oct. 9.
