1A Team of the Week: Newcastle Bobcats
The most dramatic six-man football ending of the weekend took place under the lights in Jayton.
Jayton entered the game riding a 34-game winning streak dating back to Nov. 24, 2023. The Jaybirds looked like they were set to keep that streak alive too.
With just seconds left and their game against Newcastle tied at 52, they were knocking on the door at the Newcastle 10 yard line.
Enter Keegen Voyles.
The Newcastle senior stepped in front of a Jayton pass and returned it 80 yards for the game-winning touchdown as time expired.
“It was good to see him have hard work pay off for him,” Newcastle head coach Isiah Archer said. “It was a big win for our program; we are happy for the guys and the team they are becoming. “
Voyles also had a 60-yard touchdown offensively, but Keyton Newland was the star of the show on that side of the ball. He finished with 18 carries for 292 yards and five rushing touchdowns as well as 95 yards passing and another score.
Cooper Clayton also had a big game on defense with 12 tackles and an interception. Joey Solto finished in double figures too with 10 total tackles.
With the 58-52 victory, Newcastle is now 4-1 on the season. The Bobcats are right back to action this Thursday as they travel to face a 5-1 Whiteface team that is regarded as another one of the top teams in the state.
