5A Team of the Week: La Joya Juarez-Lincoln
It had already been a historic season for La Joya Juarez-Lincoln.
For the first time in school history, the Huskies started 4-0. Making that feat more impressive was the fact they had won just three total games in the previous seven seasons combined.
Their next goal? End a 41-game district losing streak.
On Thursday night, the Huskies finally got it done.
Hector Lopez carried the ball 21 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns, while Santiago Lopez racked up 67 yards and a score on nine carries.
That proved to be enough as the Huskies shut down PSJA Southwest 24-9 for their first district victory since October 18, 2019.
“Starting 4-0 gave our kids confidence, but more importantly, it showed them what they’re capable of when they commit to doing things the right way.” La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Head Coach Daniel Cortez said. “To now be in a position where we’ve snapped a long district losing streak makes it even more meaningful. It’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice of our players, coaches, and the support from our school administration and community.”
The defense played its part too with defensive tackle Alexander Garcia recovering two fumbles. Sophomore defensive end Daniel Rodriguez also had a fumble recovery while fellow defensive end Jayden Luna led the Huskies with nine total tackles.
The Huskies are now 5-2 overall and 1-2 in district play. Next up, they’ll hit the road to take on Sharyland, looking to continue this special season.
“I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished so far, but I’m even more proud of the culture these young men are building,” Cortez said. “They’ve earned this success, and it’s exciting to see them create something that future players at our school can build upon. We still have a long ways to go to building this program, but we are headed in the right direction together I believe.”
