When the Belton Tigers took the field Friday night, it was a kickoff like any other. Both teams came ready to play after a week of preparation, a sure-fire game plan, and a yearning to desire to populate the win column. Belton was the Cinderella of the story having lost to their opponent, Round Rock Stony Point, their last two meetings. By the time the last second on the clock expired, however, Belton would not only walk away victorious but would leave the field as history makers.
The first quarter was a battle of offenses. Peyton Mansell, QB, lead the team to 21 points with a pair of touchdowns by Davion Peoples and another by Logan Collins. Kicker Nyle Tabat was perfect on PATs adding an additional three points for the team. Stony Point didn’t let Belton run away with the game, though, putting 14 points on the board.
The Belton defense made their presence known in the second quarter by completely shutting out Stony Point. Meanwhile, the offense tacked on another 21 points, this time with a pair of touchdowns by Weston Lucas and Peoples’ third trip to the end zone. Belton left the field at halftime with a 42-14 lead, an impressive offensive feat already.
Perhaps it was the excitement of The Marching 100’s spectacular halftime show, but after scoring 42 points in the first half, the Tigers were held to a scoreless third quarter. Stony Point maximized on a Belton interception and closed the gap with a touch down closing out the third quarter 42-28.
The fourth quarter brought with it four Belton touchdowns including scores by Lane Holmes, Chandler Vela, and two by Bryce Julian. Stony Point was able to visit the end zone one last time. The game ultimately ended in a 70-35 shootout to Belton’s advantage. This squad scored more points in a single game than any team in Belton’s football history. Previously, the highest was 65 points attained in 1978 and 1991.
If setting a school record isn’t enough to keep the Belton Tigers on your radar, perhaps head coach and athletic director Bob Shipley will. Shipley served as a Texas Longhorns football analyst and coached in Brownwood where the team was a four-time playoff contender under his leadership. He is the father of Jordan Shipley and Jaxon Shipley, who both spent time in the NFL.
Mansell, who has committed to Iowa, and the Belton Tigers will travel to Round Rock High Thursday in hopes of conquering their next obstacle on the way to the post-season.
