Usually a team that is unbeaten this far into district play isn’t an opponent’s homecoming game, well that’s exactly what the Morton Ranch Mavericks were to the Katy Tigers. The Mavericks have never beat the Tigers, losing by more than 40 points on average. Tonight was no different outside of the fact that it raised that average. Morton Ranch and Katy both came into the game 3-0 in district 19-6A play.

The Mavericks started in the worst possible way, fumbling the ball away to the Tigers on their own 15, but managed to hold Katy to a field goal. People talk about the snowball effect, where things seem to start small and just keep getting bigger, this game was the epitome of that. For most of the first half the Tigers’ worst field position was their own 49 yard line, the Tigers started nearly every possession in Mavericks territory.

Birthday boy and super sophomore Tigers running back, Deondrick Glass had himself a night. Glass didn’t get the usual eye-popping rushing yards due to the Tigers starting field position. Glass still finished the first half and his night with eight carries for 149 yards, and his last five carries ended with the Katy band playing their fight song. For most players across the state this is a great night, but for Glass this is just another day at the office. Last week Glass had 246 yards in a quarter and some change before he was pulled.

Even when the Mavericks did something right it ended with the Katy band playing their fight song. Morton Ranch’s quarterback Nic Hernandez broke free for a 69-yard touchdown run late in the first half, but had the extra point blocked and returned by Corey Bethley for two points for the Tigers.

Finally when the first half ended the Tigers were up 61-6, a Katy school record for most points in a half. The Tigers and Mavericks both added meaningless scores late in the fourth to make the final 68-9.
