Shelbyville didn’t just pull off the comeback of the week in Texas. It pulled off the comeback of the year.
The Dragons trailed Joaquin 39-20 with just a minute left in Friday’s contest.
Head coach Jerred Wallace said he has been told that his team had less than a .01% chance of victory at that moment.
But never say never.
Shelbyville quarterback Gavin McDonald completed a six-yard touchdown pass to Ronnie Williams III followed by a successful two-point conversion to cut the lead to 39-28.
Instead of a traditional onside kick, Shelbyville then squibbed it beyond Joaquin’s hands team. Dragon receiver Hunter Harvey chased the ball all the way down and recovered it at the Joaquin seven yard line. McDonald then connected with Bryant Scarborough for a seven-yard touchdown and suddenly it was 39-34.
Still, the magic continued. This time, Shelbyville recovered an onside kick at midfield. After a couple of unsuccessful plays, the Dragons were left with one Hail Mary attempt from midfield.
The Dragons had one more rabbit to pull out of their hat. McDonald launched the ball towards Scarborough, who caught it at the two yard line before fighting his way in for the game-winning touchdown. Pandemonium ensued.

The score capped off 20 points in just 53 seconds, earning Shelbyville the 40-39 victory.
“During the game, we always believe we have a shot no matter the circumstance,” Wallace said. “To be able to actually pull it off was amazing. I am happy for our student-athletes and everyone involved. I am always proud of them. I believe they work extremely hard and that is why something like this has happened for these guys.”
McDonald finished with 236 passing yards and five touchdowns as well as 90 rushing yards. Scarborough led the receiving corps with five catches for 108 yards and three scores. Harvey also had a big game offensively with 11 catches for 92 yards.
With the win, Shelbyville is now 4-2 and 1-0 in district play. The Dragons will aim to keep flying high this Friday when they host Hemphill in their second district contest.
