The Lake Travis Cavaliers (10-1) entered their second-round playoff game riding a wave of confidence—having outscored their last three opponents 172 – 14. The Smithson Valley Rangers were a serious threat, though, after outgunning a tough Converse Judson team in the regular season that handed the Cavaliers their only loss of the year.
The first quarter, the Cavaliers made an early touchdown though, extra point was missed as Cameron Dicker missed it off the crossbar. Smithson Valley then brought the score 16-7, then almost immediately, Cade Green scored another touchdown for the Cavs. Lake Travis had an unusual amount of penalties, stopping a couple of key drives in the first half.
Starting second half, the Cavaliers got within the 10 yard line quickly, but Maleek Barkley’s apparent touchdown was called back due to penalty, and The Cavs were forced to settle for a field goal. With the second half being one of the most exciting game going back and forth between the two teams, 4 scores were made between the two teams. Smithson Valley Ranger, Woodward made a touchdown pass to Hilston. As the ball went back to the Cavs, Maleek Barkley made a touchdown bringing the score to 33-13 Cavaliers. Ball going back to the Rangers, yet another touchdown was made with an extra 2 points by Ranger Quarterback Adkins, now leaving the score at 33-21. The final handoff of the ball to the Cavs ended with Barkley making another touchdown finalizing the score 44-21 Cavaliers.
Lake Travis ending Smithson Valleys’ playoff streak should result in even more confidence as the Cavs go even further into the road to state. This win leaves even more people asking, “Will this be the year Lake Travis adds a 6th state title to their record?”
