On the ensuing possession, Whitney’s quarterback was hit as he was throwing, the ball came out, and Andrew Castillo scooped it up and returned it for the improbable go-ahead touchdown to put Cameron Yoe up 62-55 with under a minute to go.
Still, even that was too much time. The Wildcats were able to march down and get a touchdown of their own to cut the deficit to 62-61, but instead of kicking the extra point, they tried to run a fake PAT. Cameron Yoe read it well and came up with the stop to seal the unforgettable victory.
Townsend had a night for the record books, throwing for 625 yards and seven touchdowns. Scott (160 receiving yards and two touchdowns), JavariusJohnson (152 receiving yards and three touchdowns), and Dallen Wilcox (117 receiving yards and two touchdowns) all finished above the century mark.
Defensively, linebackers Jamarcus LeGrand and Gabriel Cerros led the Yoemen with 16 and 12 tackles respectively.
A year ago, Cameron Yoe finished 3-7. Now, the Yoemen are already 2-0. They’ll look to match last season’s win total already with a victory this Friday when they welcome in Salado.
