It’s round 3 of the Class 6A Division I area playoffs at Cavalier Stadium and the Lake Travis Cavaliers and the Los Fresnos Falcons are gearing up to go head-to-head.

Los Fresnos (8-4) saw the challenge that this game had to offer and prepared accordingly. Throughout their 2016 season, the Falcons’ offense has displayed an undeniable ability to force their opponent to compete at a high level. Their quarterback, Mark Mata, has 910 throwing yards, eight touchdown passes, and 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. He’s proved to be hard to contain in the air and on the ground. The Falcons have shown talent in defending against the pass in the past but found difficulty in stopping some of Lake Travis’s top offensive players on the ground, like Maleek Barkley who has accumulated 1,132 yards and 16 touchdowns in his 2016 offensive season. Their defense, though slightly overlooked, has played a major role in guaranteeing past wins and continued to carry the team when the offense was lacking.

Lake Travis High School, arguably the best team nationwide, is 11-1 and ranked 5th in the state of Texas. Their offense is potent and their defense is stubborn, averaging just under 52 points per game offensively and averaging below 14 points defensively. Lake Travis has a knack for crushing their opponent and will no doubt be a challenge for Los Fresnos to defeat.

The Lake Travis offense started off in high gear, with Maleek Barkley scoring in the first 5 minutes and earning a two point conversion. The Cavalier defense left no room for error as well, stopping the Falcons offense almost as soon as they started their drive. LT then put 16 points on the board off of a punt return. With 2 minutes to go in the first half, Charlie Brewer completed a touchdown pass to wide receiver, Cade Green.

Upon the return, #31 William Lisenby recovered a fumble at the 40, giving the Cavaliers possession. Brewer then completed another pass to Alec Fuentes for a touchdown, putting 30 points up against Los Fresnos and once again demonstrating the Cavaliers’ monstrous athletic ability. Charlie Brewer then runs it for another touchdown (37-0) and soon after, completed a TD pass to Cade Brewer, beginning the half at 44-0.

In the third quarter, the Lake Travis defense remained uncompromising, dominating the Los Fresnos offense with ease and style. The Cavaliers showed their depth with 2nd string quarterback, Matthew Baldwin, who successfully completed passes to Alec Fuentes and Patrick Moorer. Baldwin put up 6 points on the board with a touchdown pass to Alec Fuentes in the 3rd quarter. Cameron Dicker kicked a 34 yard field goal for 3 points in the 4th. Los Fresnos quarterback, Mark Mata, ran the ball into the end zone for a touchdown with a minute on the clock. After a successful PAT, the Falcons avoided the shutout.

The Lake Travis Cavaliers beat the Los Fresnos Falcons 54-7, advancing on to the 4th round of the Class 6A Division I area playoffs. In the next round, the Cavs may face their hometown rivals, Westlake High School, in a much anticipated rematch with a regional championship on the line.
