Mesquite Poteet vs. Lancaster

Lancaster is one of the most talented teams in the state, boasting offensive weapons like Omar Manning and Cartrell Thomas. The Tigers will take on Mesquite Poteet and the Pirates’ stout defense. The winner of this game’s road isn’t a joke, as the next round will likely feature Aledo, who is playing like they can compete at any classification right now. Aledo is a tough out, yes, but either Poteet or Lancaster will have the best bet to take them down so far this season.

Levelland vs. Abilene Wylie

I don’t think it’s insulting to either of these teams to say that we’re surprised to see them here. Each of them played incredibly good teams last round, with Levelland pummeling Andrews and Abilene Wylie stomping Argyle. Coming into this one, Nick Gerber has been inarguably one of the best passers in the state, and the architect of perhaps its best offense relative to classification. He’ll go toe-to-toe with an Abilene Wylie defense that’s been incredibly stout, headed up by running back/safety Cason Grant. With Argyle out of the way, the road to a title game still isn’t easy, but it’s definitely easier. They’re some of the last West Texas teams left, but only one can advance.

Mason vs. Refugio

Mason was written off by most after starting the season with a 2-2 record, but they’ve been on fire ever since. They’re playoff tested, and might be the best chance anyone in 2A DI has at taking down Refugio, who is playing like a freight train this year. This heavyweight matchup of perennial powers might mean a state title for the winner, provided each team can stay healthy.

DeSoto vs. Cedar Hill

We might have a new favorite to win it all in 6A DII if Cedar Hill can prove that they’ve improved from their earlier loss to DeSoto this year and knock off the Eagles. DeSoto is undefeated and has some great wins under their belt, but a struggle of a game against Abilene that they probably should’ve lost shows us that the Eagles aren’t invulnerable. This one is going to be a great one, start to finish, and might decide who takes home the 6A DII crown.
