Jonesboro made the trek to Arlington for their first ever appearance in the state title game in undefeated style. They dreamt about what it would be like to drive back champions. That dream will have to wait a year, as the Eagles fell to (Gail) Borden County 60-12 in the 1A Six-Man Division I title game.

The Eagles could never put back-to-back drives together that resulted in points, and with the high powered Coyotes offense going at full steam, it was hard to catch up when they fell behind.

“We dropped that pass which was huge on an early possession and we ran out of time right before half,” Jonesboro head coach Eddie Gallegos said, rehashing his team’s offensive performance.

After allowing an opening drive touchdown, the Eagles marched right back, scoring on a Robert Robuck eight yard rush, but the extra point was missed, making it 8-6. Jonesboro (14-1) wasn’t able to answer the next Coyotes score. Robuck made it 24-12 with 4:46 remaining in the first half after he ran it in from two yards out, but it ended up being the last time the Eagles reached paydirt this evening.

“We were just never able to get ahead of the chains in the second half, it just turned into a landslide, and we could never finish a drive.” Gallegos said.

Junior Wyatt Young led the team with six tackles and Robuck finished the game with 59 yards. The Borden County duo of Hunter Jones and Corbin Summers was just too much for the Eagles defense. They were responsible for 187 rushing yards and threw a combined four touchdowns.

Even when the going got tough on Wednesday night, the Jonesboro community was behind their Eagles cheering them on until the final whistle. “They always travel well and they weren’t going to miss this game tonight,” Gallegos said of the community support. “People that don’t even have kids on the team came to watch, I just can’t say enough about our community tonight.”
