The Cy Lakes Spartans started the season with a win and a 2-2 record after four games. Six straight losses to end the season won’t sit well with the team as they head into the offseason.
Though the losses to Cy Creek (53-49) and Cy Woods (36-33) were close, the other losses on the year weren’t as much.
The Spartans allowed 41.5 points a game while averaging just 26.6 of their own. The Spartans will look back at 2016 as yet another rebuilding year — with nowhere to go but up.
Key Losses
DB Brenden Lemon, WR Nate Green, RB Ansar Richardson
Richardson led the team in carries (142) and yards (734) and was tied for the team lead with six rushing touchdowns. Green led the team in catches and yards and had three touchdown catches.
Lemon, an all-district selection had three interceptions and 30 tackles.
Key Returners
QB Tyrese Miller, DB Julian Hall, P Ted Solomon
Miller last season as a junior completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,461 yards a game and 12 touchdowns to five different receivers.
Hall hauled in a team-leading four interceptions and added 19 tackles from his defensive back position.
Solomon was named one of the punters on the 17-6A all-district team.
Verdict
Cy Lakes has won just four total games in the last four years. Still, it’s a fairly new school in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District that’s growing even more. The Spartans are still looking for their first winning season since the football program began in 2010.
For Cy Lakes, the first goal must be to win at least five games. The second goal is to make the playoffs, and then the goals start getting higher — like winning playoff games and going for district titles.
The Spartans do have leaders coming back in all three phases of the game, and experience will be good for a team to turn the corner and get on a winning track.
