The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Tuesday that they had released running back Jamaal Charles.
With the emergence of Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, the Chiefs were looking to gain some salary cap room with the departure of their third round pick.
Charles, a Port Arthur, Texas native and Memorial High School standout, played in 103 games for Kansas City and is also the franchise’s all-time leading rusher. He will now have to see where his future will lie in free agency.
In a statement released by the Chiefs, Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said of Charles:
“On behalf of my family and the entire Kansas City Chiefs team, I’d like to thank Jamaal Charles for his contributions and dedication over the last nine seasons. Jamaal has been one of the most prolific players in our organizations history, and I have enormous amount of respect for what he has accomplished.”
He further added that the Chiefs organization will be ready to honor his playing career when the time is right.
The former Texas Longhorn was a four-time Pro Bowler with the Chiefs and racked up more than 7,200 yards in his career.
