Laredo United definitely had an up and down season. They lost to San Benito in their season opener, but beat San Antonio Reagan. They had a two game skid, including a loss to rival United South, but made it to the third round of the playoffs after beating a good Harlingen team, but they met up with Austin Westlake and lost.
United had a heck of a season by any standard, 9-4 is nothing to sneeze at. However, when they did lose, it was most likely bad. This is still a team that’s going to make some waves, they just have to reload some key positions.
Key Losses
QB David Sanchez II, WR Danny Ruiz, DT Eddie Herrejon, DE Mark Rodriguez, CB JJ Salas
There’s a lot that will be missing on the United sideline, and it starts with stellar quarterback David Sanchez II. Losing the offensive MVP of the district is always a tough ordeal. Danny Ruiz was excellent as well, and Herrejon, Rodriguez, and Salas held down a defense that was sneaky good.
Key Returners
RB Isaac Velasquez, C Denilson Hinoj0sa ILB Joe Casso, FS Chris Fine
Isaac Velasquez might end up being the offensive MVP of the whole district with Hinojosa paving the way for him for a second season. The defense will be in good hands with Fine and Casso at the helm as well.
The Verdict
No matter what ends up happening this season, sooner or later Laredo United is going to run into a playoff barrier in the form of the schools from Austin and San Antonio. They’re not all on a completely different level, but some of the teams they could play fall into that name-brand elite tier. There’s no reason to think that Laredo United couldn’t do the same thing again this year, but without a set in stone quarterback, it’s tough to see them going on a very deep playoff run.
