With all the hope riding on the Dallas Cowboys’ next year, those on the outside of the organization looking in are all wondering the same thing: what in the heck is wrong at Jerry World?
Four members of the ‘Boys defensive squad are facing various levels of indiscretions, ranging from violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. In May, cornerback Nolan Carroll was arrested for DWI; last week, defensive end David Irving was reported as being banned four games for taking PEDs; Tuesday saw linebacker Damien Wilson charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, which transpired at the Toyota Stadium parking lot; defensive end Randy Gregory is likely to miss the entire season for doping.
Couple the defensive lawlessness with the recent accusations into Zeke Elliott’s domestic assault investigation; the entire unethical equation sums to an unhinged Cowboys’ environment off-the-field.
According to the most recent Cowboys’ depth chart, that’s four starters, a backup defensive end and a 2015 second-round pick facing suspensions or jail time right before the start of the season. With potential losses to the start of the season, the inexperienced unit of NFL neighbor the Houston Texans looks like it could actually make a run for Lone Star supremacy.
Every individual makes their own choices, but it’s up to some sort of authoritative figure — whether it be coach Jason Garrett, coach Rod Marinelli or Jerry Jones himself — to step in and attempt damage control on what appears to be a compromised culture. The last thing another Texas program wants is to dissolve into a Baylor-esque scandal. Every man has a boss, and the NFL isn’t any different.
