The Center Texas area now has an idea of what to expect of teams after their games last week. Here is a preview of the best games in the Central Texas area for week 1.
Mart at West
Coming off a Week 1 loss to Lexington 40-38, the Mart Panthers will be seeking their first win of the season as they head to West. The West Trojans are coming into the game on a high note after beating Rockdale 42-24 to open the season. This game will be a 2A/3A matchup and Mart isn’t used to starting the season with a losing streak.
Last Meeting (2016): Mart 26, West 13
Killeen at Waco High
This game is 6A/5A matchup of familiar foes. The Lions beat SA Roosevelt 41-17, while Killeen lost to Round Rock Stony Point 42-21 in Week 1. Waco High had an outstanding defensive performance forcing six turnovers. The Kangaroos will need to take care of the ball in order to score and their defense will need to force more three-and-outs.
Last meeting (2016): Waco 34, Killeen 7
Jonesboro at Milford
Jonesboro is coming off the school’s first trip to the state championship, where they fell to Borden County 60-12. The Eagles beat the Iredell Dragons 30-0 to start the 2017 season. Milford opened the season up in Hico, where they won a shootout out with the Bryson Cowboys 51-50. These two teams have no love lost and with Jonesboro winning the last couple of games, Milford is determined to get the W.
Last Meeting (2016): Jonesboro 34, Milford 16
Gatesville at Cameron Yoe
Last season the Hornets found themselves in a rebuilding process, however the Hornets had plenty of sting in week 1, as the beat Waco Connally 38-14. The Yoemen had by their standards a down season as well in 2016, but wasted no time resuming their winning ways defeating Bellville 40-14. Cameron had a balanced offensive performance leading to six touchdowns and 468 total yards. The Hornets defense will need to play well again this week in order to come out the victors.
Last Meeting (2016): Cameron Yoe 69, Gatesville 31
Waco Midway vs Round Rock Cedar Ridge
Midway found themselves in a dogfight in week 1 with Cedar Park. The Panthers were able to pull off the huge win on the road 35-28. Cedar Ridge defeated the New Braunfels Canyon 46-14, so both teams will be looking to stay undefeated. Midway star QB Tanner Mordecai was 12-27 for 199 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Cedar Ridge will need to stay in position in the secondary and tackle in numbers, in order to slow down the Panthers offense.
Last Meeting (2016): Round Rock Cedar Ridge 52, Waco Midway 3
Fans will have plenty of games to choose from across the state this week, but if you are a casual fan looking for a matchup in Central Texas these are a few to consider.
