Struggling Houston Texans Get Blown Out By L.A. Rams

LOS ANGELES– For the second straight week, quarterback Tom Savage struggled to get his offense moving as the Houston Texans fell to the Los Angeles Rams by a final score of 33-7 at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. Savage ended the day with 221 yards on 18-of-36 with a touchdown and two interceptions. The Texans are now 3-6 on the season and now seem to be heading in the wrong direction.

Since taking over for rookie sensation Deshaun Watson who suffered a torn ACL on Nov. 2 — the former Clemson Tiger had passed for 1,699 yards with 19 touchdown passes and eight interceptions for an overall passer rating of 103 at the time of the injury — Savage has struggled immensely. The four-year NFL veteran has averaged 220 passing yards and completed less than 50 percent of passes during his two starts.

Savage’s struggles made it difficult for any other aspect of the Texans’ offense to have success. Running backs Lamar Miller and D’Onta Foreman accounted for a total of 78 yards on 18 carries and no touchdowns as the Rams’ defense showed no fear for the passing game so they loaded the box.

Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was left looking for answers during the postgame press conference, “I have to figure out how to coach this team better and play better. We’ve been inconsistent.”

Savage was forthcoming regarding his performance, “It’s on the quarterback when we only put up seven points. It’s on me.” He added, “I can promise you the guys in that locker room won’t stop competing.”

In opposition, L.A. quarterback Jared Goff overcame a skittish start, passing for 355 yards and three touchdowns. The Rams rushing attacked accounted for 99 yards and averaged 6.2 yards a carry.

In the first half, the Texans defense was stout and pressed Goff causing him to throw before he was ready and rattled the second-year starter. Unfortunately for Houston, the defensive front tired and was eventually exploited as the game progressed. The second part of the game was all Rams.

Savage will now need to shake off this performance and get ready for the Arizona Cardinals this coming Sunday.
