ALEDO, Texas — Defensive-minded Gary Patterson may have acquired the steal after picking up a verbal commitment from Wyatt Harris late Monday night.

Harris could be a valuable addition, though, given Texas Christian University’s offseason losses. The Horned Frogs’ will lose Travin Howard in 2018 and Arico Evans and Ty Summers in 2019. Montrel Wilson, a sophomore, will be the last remaining rotational piece from this season’s Alamo Bowl victors.
The 6-foot-3 and 218-pound outside linebacker at Aledo High School chose TCU over SMU. He won a UIL Class 5A Division II state championship in 2016.
Harris amassed three interceptions, one fumble recovery, and 71 tackles (42 solo) as part of the Bearcats’core group of defenders. Perhaps most important, it was the fifth highest total on a team that finished 15-1 overall and 7-0 in District 6-5A in 2017.
Aledo lost to College Station 20-19 in the state championship. The Bearcats, though, are heavy favorites to return to prep football’s culminating event next season.
A year earlier, he helped Aledo hold its opponents to 18 points per game during the regular season and 17.6 ppg in the playoffs. That included a near shutout against Grapevine in the area round. The Bearcats also allowed 16 points against Callallen in the state championship game.
If he signs an NLI with the Fort Worth-based institution, he would follow in the footsteps of his brothers. Hunter and Wes currently are Horned Frogs offensive linemen.
Harris, however, is not ranked per 247Sports Composite Rankings and is the second TCU verbal commitment of his class. Cedar Hill cornerback Donovan Collins, who pledged in August, was the first.
