In a physical matchup between Frisco Lone Star and Lancaster, four-star wide receiver Marvin Mims led the Rangers to a 38-20 win over the Tigers. Mims, a Sooner football commit, broke the state record for single-season receiving yards Friday night in Rockwall — a record set in 1998 by Stephenville’s Cody Cardwell.
It didn’t take long for Lone Star to put a score on the board as Mims ran the ball in for a touchdown on the second play of the opening drive.
Lancaster was quick to answer with a two-minute drive ending in a touchdown from Tre Bradford. Lone Star’s Trace Buckler answered with a touchdown of his own.
Bradford scored to open the second quarter, but a blocked extra-point attempt left Lancaster trailing 14-13. Teammate Andre Dibbles picked up a huge interception off of Rangel, but Lancaster was unable to capitalize off of the big defensive play.
With a reception between defenders, Lone Star’s Brandon Spencer II extended the Rangers’ lead 21-13. With time close to expiring, Lone Star scored once more with a field goal to go into half ahead 24-13.
After Lancaster was forced to go three-and-out in their second half opening drive, Mims ran a 62-yard touchdown in extending Lone Star’s lead 31-13. On Lancaster’s next drive, Lone Star’s Max Linhoff came up big with a sack for a loss on Glenn Rice Jr. Lancaster was forced to punt again on 4th and 21.
Late in the third quarter, Rice Jr. found Majik Rector in the end zone to cut Lone Star’s lead 31-20. Without a score in the fourth quarter and a huge interception from Blake Gotcher ending any hopes of a comeback on Lancaster’s end, Garret Rangel took victory formation and ended the game.
Mims has 94 catches for over 2,270 yards with 29 receiving touchdowns on the season. If Lone Star keeps advancing, Mims could break the career receiving yards record of 5,424 set by Burnet’s Jordan Shipley between 2000 and 2003.
On breaking the record, Mims says “it feels really good”.
Mims says he had no clue about the record until Wednesday when someone told him about it. Even though he wasn’t focused on breaking the record, Mims says it’s “really great” and looks forward to continuing a push towards a state title with the rest of his team.
Lone Star will face the winner of Denton Ryan and Colleyville Heritage in a State Semifinals matchup next week.
