A Fort Worth Star-Telegram exclusive has revealed new details about the eligibility case involving five-star cornerback John Meredith III.

According to public records obtained by the Star-Telegram, UIL Assistant Athletic Director AJ Martinez communicated with Euless Trinity head coach Aaron Lineweaver throughout the Previous Athletic Participation Form process. The report says Martinez provided guidance as Lineweaver documented his belief that Meredith transferred to North Crowley for athletic purposes.
Meredith enrolled at North Crowley in January after three seasons at Trinity. The District 11-6A Executive Committee later ruled him ineligible, and the UIL State Executive Committee upheld that decision by a 3-2 vote in July.
The Star-Telegram’s reporting shows that Martinez and Lineweaver communicated for several months about Meredith’s status, the PAPF and which district committee would consider the case. The records also indicate that the UIL knew the case could become complicated because Meredith’s family had presented a residency exception.
UIL Executive Director Jamey Harrison told the Star-Telegram that Martinez was not directing the outcome. Harrison said the coach had already expressed his belief that the transfer was athletically motivated and that the UIL employee was reminding him to complete the form accurately.
The exchange does not, by itself, establish that the final ruling was predetermined. However, it provides a clearer picture of how involved UIL staff can become when a transfer raises multiple questions. In this case, the central issue was not simply where Meredith lived, but whether football considerations influenced the move. That distinction is important because residency exceptions do not automatically resolve concerns about athletic motivation. The documents also help explain why the case advanced through both the district and state levels before ending with such a close vote.
The newly released records add more context to a case that drew statewide attention because of Meredith’s recruiting profile and North Crowley’s recent success. They also show how closely transfer cases can be monitored once questions arise about athletic motivation, residency and the timing of a move.
The PAPF is a standard part of Texas high school athletics. When a former school identifies possible athletic motivation, the case can advance to a District Executive Committee hearing. The committee reviews the paperwork and testimony before deciding eligibility. An appeal can then be taken to the UIL State Executive Committee.

The Star-Telegram report also identified inconsistencies between portions of the completed PAPF and Lineweaver’s later testimony. Those differences became part of the narrow appeal decision.
Meredith ultimately chose another path. He reclassified to the Class of 2026 and enrolled early at the University of Texas rather than continuing to pursue a senior season at North Crowley.
