Refugio’s defense dominates en route to program’s fifth state championship

The Class 2, Division I state championship game started off a defensive slugfest, but it ended with No. 1 Refugio defeating No. 6 Post 28-7 to earn its fifth title and first since 2016.

The first quarter saw three turnovers, including interceptions by Refugio’s Antwaan Gross and Post’s Ashton Jefferson, before Post began the scoring with a 6-yard touchdown run by Jefferson late in the first quarter.

It proved to be Antelopes’ only trip into the end zone.

Offensive MVP Austin Ochoa would get Refugio on the board with a 2-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter, and he nearly single handedly took over the game from that point on.

Ochoa finished with 108 yards on 27 carries and all four of his team’s touchdowns — each coming from less than 5 yards out.  He also threw for 207 yards on nine completions.

Post’s offense struggled to get anything going throughout the night, which was a credit to a Refugio defense led by defensive MVP Javion Williams, who had six tackles (3.5 for a loss).

Making matters worse, the Antelopes were to1 for 9 on third downs.
