Grant Delpit (Houston Lamar) helped LSU to the top of the college football world and is now a part of Cleveland’s plan to climb out of the NFL basement.
The Browns selected Delpit with the 44th overall pick of the NFL Draft on Friday. Cleveland is coming off. A 6-10 season and has not found consistency since the franchise was reborn in 1999.
Delpit brought home plenty of hardware as a junior at LSU by being named the Thorpe Award winner in December then helping the Tigers conclude a perfect season with a College Football Playoff National Championship weeks later.
He had two interceptions, a forced fumble, 65 tackles, two sacks and 4.5 tackles or loss in 2019 and played his best in LSU’s biggest game.
In the CFP Championship Game, Delpit helped end any threat of a Clemson comeback by forcing Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence to fumble the football after a 10-yard gain. Derek Stingley recovered the fumble with 3:53 remaining LSU ran out the clock and get the party started in New Orleans.
He ended the game with six tackles. Before he electrified the Superdome, Delpit was a star at Houston Lamar and transferred to the IMG Academy in Florida for his senior year in high school.
The run of former Texas prep stars continued on Friday as the Houston Texans took TCU defensive lineman Ross Blacklock (Missouri City Elkins) 40th overall and the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Colorado wide receiver Laviska Shenault (Desoto) with the next pick.
