WIAA Delays High School Season for Washington Schools, Could Texas Follow Suit?

On Tuesday evening, the WIAA held a meeting in which the board took action delaying the start of the fall football season until September 5th

Will fans see UIL follow Washington’s decision to delay the football season?

The most notable move has been made regarding fall sports by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA). On Tuesday evening, the WIAA held a meeting in which the board took action delaying the start of the fall football season until September 5th and all other sports delayed until September 7th. The WIAA board plans to make it’s next statement regarding fall sports at their next meeting on July 22nd.

With the Ivy League reportedly set to make an “unprecedented announcement” on Wednesday in which multiple coaches within the Ivy League are anticipating the conference to move all fall sports (including football) to the spring and Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) set to make an announcement next Thursday (July 16, 2020), many fans, coaches, athletes, parents, media members and more around the state are watching the University Interscholastic League (UIL) for a decision regarding the 2020 football season.

Earlier this summer, the UIL made a statement announcing they were going to look towards the NCAA and other high school sports governing bodies for guidance when the time came to make a decision. More recently, in a meeting open to the public on YouTube, UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said he was remaining hopeful to begin the 2020 season on time with full capacity in the stands.

However, as COVID-19 cases continue to rise across the country, colleges are announcing remote-only preparations for the fall learning schedule, more and more public schools are closing down their strength and conditioning summer workouts and some districts are even going so far as announcing online learning for the first nine weeks of school. Many believe that whatever move the Ivy League makes might be one that the UIL mimics when it comes time to make a decision. For now, the fate of the 2020 season remains up in the air.
