Katy and Cedar Hill met for the fourth time in the past nine years for a state title in the 2020 6A Division II State Title Game. Katy’s defense certainly showed up for the occasion. The Tigers forced three turnovers, including two defensive touchdowns in the second half, as they pulled away from Cedar Hill for a 51-14 victory. It was Katy’s ninth state title overall and its first since 2015.
2020 Season Recap
Despite winning the state title, Katy didn’t bring home a district title for the first time since 2008 as it was taken down by Katy Tompkins 24-19, a result that ended a 75-game win streak in district play for the Tigers. However, besides that one blip in the road, the Tigers were dominant. They won their other 14 games by an average margin of 37 points, including a 63-7 shellacking of Buda Hays in the state semifinals to reach the state title game against Cedar Hill.

2021 Player Spotlight
Senior Defensive End Malick Sylla 6’6” 230 lbs.
A unanimous first team all-district selection in 2020 and Texas A&M commit, he’s back fully healthy after suffering an injury in the playoffs a year ago that caused him to miss Katy’s final three games. With his size, expect him to terrorize opposing offensive lines as one of the best defensive linemen in Texas in 2021.
2021 Katy Tigers Preview
There is plenty of talent back for Katy defensively this year. The Tiger defense will have Sylla up front, USC commit Ty Kana at linebacker, Texas A&M commit Bobby Taylor as its top corner, and safeties Hamilton McMartin and Arian Parish, a rising recruit. Offensively, there are plenty of pieces back as well. Junior running back Seth Davis (1,625 rushing yards and 17 TDs) will be the main man in the backfield this year after forming a tandem with his now-graduated brother Jalen in 2020. Quarterback Caleb Koger (1,460 passing yards, 23 touchdowns) is back with a year of experience under his belt and he’ll have Oregon commit Nicholas Anderson (450 receiving yards) as his top target in the passing game. The offensive line will need some retooling though as the four players that earned all-district honors in 2020 all graduated.
Games to Watch
In non-district play, Katy will renew acquaintances with The Woodlands (Sept. 17) for the first time since 2017 in a showdown between two of Houston’s best football programs. The all-important showdown against Katy Tompkins will take place on October 1, homecoming weekend for Katy.
