From Houston to Canton: The Incredible Career of Darrell Green

Darrell Green is widely regarded as one of the greatest cornerbacks in NFL history. Over the course of his 20-year career with the Washington Redskins, Green amassed numerous accolades and set multiple records. Early Life and High School Career

Darrell Ray Green was born in Houston, Texas in 1960. He grew up in a family of 11 children, and his parents instilled in him a strong work ethic and a deep sense of faith. As a child, Green was a talented athlete, excelling in a variety of sports including football, track and field, and basketball.

Green attended Jesse H. Jones High School in Houston, where he played football and ran track. As a football player, Green played multiple positions, including quarterback, running back, and defensive back. He also returned kicks and punts. Green’s versatility and speed made him a standout player on the field, and he quickly caught the attention of college scouts.

College Career

After graduating from high school, Green enrolled at Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M-Kingsville) where he continued to play football and run track. At Texas A&I, Green established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in college football, earning All-American honors in his junior and senior seasons.

Green’s success at Texas A&I paved the way for his future success in the NFL. His speed, agility, and instincts on the field caught the eye of NFL scouts, and he was selected in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins.

NFL Career

Green’s NFL career got off to a strong start, and he quickly established himself as one of the top cornerbacks in the league. Over the course of his 20-year career with the Redskins, Green amassed numerous accolades, including seven Pro Bowl selections, four All-Pro selections, and two Super Bowl championships.

Green was known for his blazing speed and his ability to read offenses and make plays on the ball. He was a shutdown cornerback, and his presence on the field struck fear into opposing offenses. Green’s success on the field was due in part to his tireless work ethic and his commitment to excellence.
