He may have bailed for the Las Vegas Raiders during the last season of his career, but Dallas Cowboys legend Jason Witten has stayed in the Lone Star State. The 17-year tight end is preparing to begin his third season as a Texas high school football head coach at Argyle Liberty Christian.
So far, Witten’s Warriors have fielded both victories and defeats; in Witten’s first year as HC, the squad only managed to win a pair of games. Last year, the Warriors won 10 games and went undefeated in TAPPS District 1-D2 play. Argyle Liberty Christian plans on building momentum into 2023.
Witten’s son, CJ Witten, is a junior at the school. However, he’s not following in his father’s footsteps as a tight end. As a linebacker, Witten’s offspring had a solid season last year, tallying 75 tackles. It’s not the first time a Witten has coached the younger generation; at Elizabethton High School in Tennessee, Witten was under the tutelage of his late grandfather, David Rider, who served as a father figure to him.
As the head coach of a private school, Witten is able to speak freely about his faith, incorporating it into strong morals to show his student-athletes the proper way to carry themselves and to treat others with respect. Although, he says all walks of life, not just Christians, are a part of Warrior football.
“This is a part of our lives,” Witten told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “This isn’t just the way we started the practice. So we don’t just pray at the end of practice. We’re here to walk with you.”
The Warriors open their season against Prestonwood Christian on August 25th.
